The mission of the Design Museum in London is big: "Creating the most inspiring, exciting and engaging design msuseum in the world." – That includes a website that is a design statement itself.
The primary challenge addressed is the static nature of traditional museum presentations. Museums often struggle with engaging a digital audience, as traditional displays do not translate well into the dynamic medium of the web. The lack of interactive and compelling content can lead to a modest public image and may not effectively highlight the uniqueness of the museum's collection, potentially affecting visitor interest and sales.
To combat the issue of engagement, the solution involves integrating full-screen images with interactive elements such as headers, buttons, and sliding texts. This technique ensures that as a visitor scrolls, they are met with a dynamic layering effect that adds depth and character to the website. The inclusion of action-oriented design further aims to convert visitor interest into sales, vital for the museum's financial sustainability, especially considering its lack of subsidies.
The ‘Pietra Nera’ case study shows how a digital restaurant website can be presented in an innovative and different way. In an oversaturated market of restaurant websites, which often tend towards monotonous design and fail to capture the unique character of the restaurants, ‘Pietra Nera’ needed to stand out. Traditional approaches often lead to static and unmemorable online presences, but Pietra Nera deliberately took a different approach.
The website was designed as a visual homage to the vibrant colours of Sicily. This colour palette not only serves as an aesthetic accent, but also runs through the entire site and tells the story of Pietra Nera's culinary vision. It reflects the dynamic atmosphere of the restaurant. Interactivity was at the centre of the design and development process to actively involve users. Full-screen photos, animated headlines, interactive buttons and moving text create an inviting, immersive user experience. As visitors scroll, they discover in-depth content that adds character to the website, captures the vibrant Sicilian spirit and reflects the creative, experimental nature of Pietra Nera's cuisine.
This interactive design not only serves to showcase the restaurant, but also to convert interest into actual reservations. In a world where digital presence is critical to a restaurant's success, Pietra Nera's website stands out as a vibrant and engaging platform. It appeals to a discerning audience looking for an unrivalled culinary experience.
The solution was to create a website that itself serves as a canvas for innovation and interaction. At the heart of this design is an interactive hero image that immediately draws visitors into the theme of "shifting boundaries."
This element is not just a visual treat but an invitation to explore, reflect, and engage with the art world in a more meaningful way. The website's design seamlessly integrates full-screen visuals with interactive components like headers, buttons, and sliding texts. As visitors navigate through the site, they encounter a dynamic layering effect that adds depth and intrigue, encouraging further exploration.
The inclusion of an intuitive registration process directly on the website was crucial. It ensures that interested participants can easily secure their spot in the workshop, bridging the gap between initial interest and actual engagement. Providing comprehensive information about the workshop, including its objectives, schedule, and the artists involved, was paramount. This approach not only facilitates a smooth user experience but also fosters an environment of openness and accessibility.
In crafting this website, the aim was to not just inform but to inspire and engage. By integrating interactive elements that reflect the workshop's innovative theme, we aimed to convert visitor curiosity into active participation. This design strategy is vital for the success of the workshop, ensuring it reaches a wider audience and achieves its goal of pushing the boundaries of art and creativity. Through this website, we invite visitors to embark on a journey of artistic discovery and to be part of a community that celebrates the transformative power of art.
The market for traditional olive oil is saturated, but Belva stands out with eye-catching illustrations on the packaging. This approach captures the attention and imagination of consumers and is reflected in the design of the interactive website. The site offers a playful, immersive experience with animated headlines, interactive buttons and scrollable text.
To encourage community and interaction, the website includes an innovative recipe collection that encourages users to view and share their own recipes. This deepens the connection with the audience and strengthens brand awareness through shared experiences. The website combines full-screen images and interactive elements to increase brand awareness and customer loyalty. It converts visitors' interest into active engagement and motivates them to integrate Belva olive oil into their cooking.
For the case study «Celans», a premier glasses and spectacles shop based in Colchester, the vision was clear: to create a digital storefront that not only showcases their latest eyewear collections but also seamlessly integrates essential information about their business into a single, engaging online experience.
The challenge was to transcend the conventional boundaries of online retail spaces, particularly in the highly visual and personal world of eyewear. Traditional online platforms often fall short in providing an immersive and informative journey for customers looking for their next pair of glasses.
The solution? A meticulously crafted one-page landing website that embodies both simplicity and sophistication in design. This approach ensures that visitors are greeted with an intuitive and streamlined navigation experience, allowing them to effortlessly explore the newest eyewear models, understand the services offered, and even schedule examinations through a user-friendly appointment form.
The design of the website is intentionally modern and uncluttered, emphasizing clarity and ease of use. By adopting a minimalist aesthetic, we highlight the product's quality and the brand's commitment to contemporary design trends. The interactive elements of the website, including hover effects and smooth transitions, engage visitors in a dynamic visual dialogue with the brand, fostering a deeper connection and encouraging exploration.
Embarking on the journey to ignite young minds with the thrill of scientific discovery, the website designed for ETH Zürich's kids' scientific workshops stands as a beacon of innovation and engagement in the educational landscape.
With a vision to demystify science for children and foster a lifelong curiosity in the natural world, this project was approached with a child-centric philosophy at its heart. Recognizing the unique challenge of capturing the fleeting attention of a younger audience, the site was conceived to be as inviting and interactive as possible, embracing an experimental design ethos that delights and educates in equal measure.
Central to the website's appeal is its vibrant, dynamic interface, which mirrors the hands-on, explorative nature of the workshops themselves. Knowing the importance of an intuitive user experience for both young explorers and their guardians, the site features playful animations, bright colors, and interactive elements that invite users to dive deeper into the world of science. Navigation is made effortless, with clearly marked sections and engaging visuals leading the way to discoveries in physics, biology, chemistry, and beyond.
A key component of the site's functionality is the integrated calendar of events, a pivotal resource for parents and educators planning their educational adventures. This interactive calendar not only showcases the wide array of workshops available but also simplifies the process of finding and registering for events, ensuring that no opportunity for discovery is missed.
Understanding the need for ongoing updates and the addition of new workshops, a custom content management system (CMS) was developed. This streamlined, user-friendly CMS empowers the ETH Zürich team to maintain the site's content with ease, allowing them to update event details, add new sessions, and share scientific breakthroughs without the need for specialized technical skills. This aspect of the project underscores the commitment to making science accessible to all, ensuring the site remains a relevant and enriching resource for curious minds.
Our mission was to encapsulate the rich tapestry of British postal history in a digital format that is both engaging and informative.
The challenge at hand was not merely to transition a traditional museum experience into the digital realm but to do so in a manner that elevates the user's experience beyond the conventional. The museum, with its unique focus on the evolution of the British postal system, required a platform that could effectively showcase its collections, facilitate ticket purchases, and offer an online store—all while being easily manageable by the client through a simple Content Management System (CMS).
The heart of our solution lies in the seamless integration of design and functionality. Recognizing the importance of an intuitive user experience, we developed a website that not only allows visitors to effortlessly purchase tickets and explore merchandise but also to immerse themselves in the history and stories behind the exhibits. The use of postcard elements throughout the design serves as a thematic thread that ties the various components of the website together, offering a nostalgic nod to the museum's subject matter while enhancing the visual and interactive appeal of the site.
To address the client's need for autonomy in managing the website, we implemented a straightforward CMS that empowers them to update content, manage ticket sales, and handle online store inventory with ease. This flexibility ensures that the website can evolve alongside the museum, with new exhibitions, events, and merchandise seamlessly integrated into the online experience.
Our creative direction aimed to forge a connection between the past and the present, inviting visitors to explore the museum's offerings through a modern lens that respects and celebrates the legacy of British postal service. By incorporating dynamic elements such as full-screen images, interactive postcard-inspired motifs, and engaging layouts, we crafted a website that stands as a testament to the innovation and resilience of the postal system it showcases.
This project represents a harmonious blend of history, design, and technology, resulting in a digital platform that not only meets the practical needs of the museum but also creates a compelling online destination that encourages exploration, engagement, and conversion. Through this website, "The Postal Museum London" is poised to reach a wider audience, inviting visitors from around the globe to delve into the fascinating world of British postal history.
The Zuidas district of Amsterdam, known for its vibrant business landscape and ongoing development, presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities in terms of urban planning and information dissemination.
In collaboration with Fabrique, we undertook the mission to create an informational website that serves as a comprehensive guide to the Zuidas area, focusing specifically on upcoming construction projects, road closures, and detour routes. Our goal was clear: to design a platform that not only simplifies the complexity of urban development information but also makes it readily accessible to the public, stakeholders, and visitors of the Zuidas.
Addressing the core challenge involved distilling vast amounts of data into an intuitive, user-friendly digital experience. Traditional methods of communicating such information can often be cumbersome, leading to a disconnect between the city's developmental agenda and the community's awareness and understanding of these changes. Our solution was to prioritize simplicity in design while ensuring maximum accessibility. This meant creating a website that foregrounds clarity, with a clean layout, straightforward navigation, and a coherent visual hierarchy that guides users effortlessly to the information they seek.
The website is characterized by its minimalist aesthetic, which complements the architectural modernity of the Zuidas itself. Interactive elements, such as live maps showing construction sites, current road closures, and alternative routes, were integrated to engage users actively. These features are designed to provide real-time updates in an engaging manner, thereby fostering a more informed and connected community.
For the website of The Photographers Gallery London, the mission was both clear and ambitious: to create a digital platform that not only showcases the rich diversity of photographic art but also seamlessly integrates functionality with modern aesthetics.
In collaboration with the design agency Fabrique, we embarked on a journey to reimagine the gallery's online presence, focusing on a user-centered design that would cater to the needs of both the gallery and its diverse audience.
The primary challenge we addressed was bridging the gap between the physical experience of visiting a gallery and the digital exploration of its exhibitions and collections. Traditional online galleries often fall short in capturing the essence and impact of the art they display, resulting in a less engaging visitor experience. Our goal was to transcend this limitation by crafting a website that feels like an extension of the gallery space itself, offering a rich, immersive digital experience.
To achieve this, we employed a modern design philosophy that emphasizes clean lines, ample white space, and a minimalist aesthetic to keep the focus on the photography. The website features a dynamic, responsive design that adapts beautifully across devices, ensuring that every visitor enjoys a seamless browsing experience, whether they're exploring the site from a desktop, tablet, or smartphone.
One of the key functionalities of the site is its content management system (CMS), designed with the client's autonomy and ease of use in mind. It allows the gallery staff to effortlessly update exhibition information, artist bios, and other content, ensuring that the website remains a current and vital resource for photographers and photography enthusiasts alike. Quick access to information about exhibitions and photographers was prioritized, enabling visitors to find what they're looking for with ease and efficiency.
Furthermore, the integration of the online museum store was a critical aspect of the project. It was essential to provide a streamlined, intuitive shopping experience that encourages engagement and sales, thereby supporting the gallery's financial sustainability. By incorporating modern e-commerce principles and design elements, we've ensured that the online store is not just a retail space but an extension of the gallery's mission to promote and celebrate photography.
The goal for Goldboden Immobilien's online presence was clear: to create an engaging and accessible platform that would serve as the primary touchpoint for potential homebuyers.
At the heart of this project was the challenge of showcasing the company's property portfolio in a way that was both visually appealing and user-friendly. Given the importance of first impressions in the real estate market, the website needed to embody the sophistication and reliability of the Goldboden brand, while also incorporating their signature color yellow, reflecting the company's vibrant and welcoming ethos.
The approach to the design and development of the Goldboden Immobilien website was multifaceted, emphasizing modernity, ease of navigation, and cultural inclusivity. Recognizing the diverse clientele of the Swiss real estate market, we prioritized a multilingual design, ensuring that users could access information in their preferred language, thus widening the company's reach and appeal.
The creative direction for the website was rooted in the idea of blending functionality with aesthetic appeal. Every aspect of the site, from the layout to the choice of imagery and typographic elements, was carefully curated to ensure that it reflects the high standards and exclusivity of the Goldboden Immobilien brand. The inclusion of interactive and dynamic content layers adds depth to the user's journey through the site, making the exploration of properties not just informative, but also a visually rich experience.
Embarking on the journey to create a captivating online presence for "Cong," a Vietnamese restaurant nestled in the heart of Stockholm, was not just about building a website—it was about weaving a digital narrative that embodies the essence of Cong's culinary philosophy. Our mission was clear: to narrate the story of "Cong" in the most straightforward and compelling manner, with a spotlight shining brightly on what truly matters—the food.
The challenge we faced was distinguishing Cong in the crowded digital landscape of culinary experiences. Restaurants often rely on extensive narratives and complex visuals to attract visitors online, potentially overshadowing the core of their identity: the cuisine. To sidestep this pitfall, our strategy was to strip away the superfluous and focus singularly on the dishes. This approach meant that the food was not just featured; it was the protagonist of the website.
As the creative force behind the project, I took on the roles of designer, developer, and creative director, ensuring that every element of the website—from layout to live text—echoed the authenticity and simplicity of Cong's offerings. The photography, a critical component of our storytelling, was approached with meticulous care. Each dish was staged not merely as a meal but as a piece of art, capturing the vibrant colors, intricate textures, and the very essence of Vietnamese cuisine. These images are displayed prominently, inviting visitors to embark on a visual and culinary journey through the pages of the website.
By creating a dynamic interplay between the visual feast of the dishes and the streamlined user interface, the website serves not just as a digital brochure, but as an invitation to experience the warmth and richness of Vietnamese culture through its cuisine. This approach has transformed the static medium of a website into a dynamic and inviting space that not only showcases the culinary art of Cong but also converts visitors' interest into dining experiences, contributing to the restaurant's reputation and success in Stockholm's vibrant food scene.
This project was conceived as a visual ode to the preciousness of natural resources and the critical role they play in the ethos of sustainable fashion.
The challenge was multifaceted: to convey a message about sustainability without compromising on the aesthetic appeal and creative integrity that fashion demands.
The challenge of this videoclip was to distill the essence of Angelique Cruz's fashion into a concise visual narrative.
The objective was to move beyond traditional fashion videography, creating a piece that not only highlights the apparel but also tells a story of elegance, strength, and innovation.
The publication represents a profound personal examination of my father's origins and identity.
At the centre of this reflection is a reappraisal of the family photo archive and recent photographs taken on location in Sicily, which form the central thread of this narrative. My father, who left Sicily 40 years ago to work in Switzerland, shares his memories of his life in Sicily through these photographs and talks about himself. In addition, I report on my observations and shared experiences with him. The themes of origin and identity always resonate in these anecdotal stories. Together with the photographs, this creates a dialogue that offers an intimate insight into this confrontation, which ultimately tells a father-son story.
The publication, which was awarded the F+F School of Art and Design Zurich prize, is now to be made available to an interested readership.
